Within us all burns a deep hunger... a deep thirst.
We will go to almost any length to satisfy or numb that hunger:
Climb the highest mountain...
drive the fastest vehicle...
own
the latest toy...
find a new lover...
become addicted to some
substance or behavior...
learn the clearest doctrine...
travel to
the farthest seminar...
sing the newest song.
In the end, we always ask: "Is that all there is?"
The hunger within us is a hunger for God. There is nothing that can
satisfy that hunger, except for a consistent and intimate experience of
God.
Many will try to satisfy that hunger with Christian music, Christian
service, Christian teaching.
Eventually, many Christians become disillusioned and give up the quest.
But the hunger for God can not be satisfied by music, service or teaching,
even though it is about God. It is not the things ABOUT God that satisfy,
but God alone for which we hunger.
Many people express their hunger for spirituality while wanting nothing
to do with organized religion. This is because in their experience, so
many churches focus on programs, rules, service, politics or instruction,
while forgetting to focus on the spiritual hunger that burns within us
all. Christianity spirituality is not to be a program of the organized
religion -- it must be the center, the focus. There is no other adequate
reason for religion.
Properly understood, prayer is not something that Christians do; it is everything.
Prayer is not just another spiritual discipline; prayer is the Christian life. Spiritual disciplines
are practiced in order to deepen one's prayer, one's spiritual life, one's connection to God
through Jesus Christ.
Christian spirituality is about connecting with God -- intimately,
deeply -- and CONSISTENTLY.
