A Declaration of our Core Purpose, Values, Goal and Envisioned Future
by the Vestry of St Mark's Episcopal Church, Highland, MD
Revised, Sept, 2005

Who We Are

St. Mark's...

  • is centered within the Episcopal Tradition, as embodied in Holy Scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, the Sacraments and Episcopal liturgy.
  • glorifies God through worship in a joyous environment, using beautiful music, symbols and physical space.

Our Core Purpose

Our core purpose is to build a Christian community ...

  • that fosters an experiential connection to God,
  • that encourages spiritual growth, and
  • that helps people discover and form the values and wisdom that lead to Christ-focused lives.

Our core purpose includes ...

  • supporting families in their Christian formation of their children to develop these same values and wisdom.
  • promoting the ministry of our members to one another and to others.

Our Values

We at St. Mark's value most highly...

  • belonging to a Christ-focused community of friendships and relationships that supports each other, our families and our children;
  • building personal relationships with God and experiencing the spiritual growth that results from such relationships;
  • supporting our spiritual growth through mission to others.

Our Present Goal

We intend to become a program-based church of sufficient size and resources to accomplish our core purpose,
to demonstrate our values,
and to reach our envisioned future.

Our Envisioned Future

With God's help...

  • We will be known for our focus on building a community of conscious, intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • We will be known for our vibrant Sunday School and youth ministries which also focus on building conscious, intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • We will form a spiritually healthy community, marked by shared leadership and Grace.

  • We will teach, empower, and support our members to pursue and engage in outreach and mission, so that outreach and mission become part of the fiber of our spiritual life and community.

  • We will enjoy a wide range of worship, liturgy and music that expresses the broad tradition of the Episcopal church.

  • Our leadership will view themselves in the congregation as leaders who set a standard of sacrificial giving and an example of a healthy spiritual life.

  • Our members will surpass national and diocesan levels for average parish giving.

  • We will support our members through an effective system of pastoral care.

  • We will engage our members primarily through a rich variety of programs, with the increased staff and associated facilities necessary.
